Canahua aka "Canawa," "Kaniwa," or "Baby Quinoa":

Every family has one, and quinoa is no exception: meet the dark seed! This baby cousin has a slightly sweeter taste and is a bit crunchier in texture than quinoa. A bonus is that canahua doesn't contain the saponins that can give unrinsed quinoa a bitter taste.

Stuff to know:

  • Even more protein- and fiber-rich than quinoa.
  • Contains all of the essential amino acids, including lysine, which is not typically found in high amounts in grains.
  • Rich in antioxidant flavonoids.
  • Unusual for grains, canahua is a great source of calcium.

Directions for use:

  • In saucepan, add 1 part canahua to 2 parts liquid (water or stock).

  • Bring to boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer for approx. 12 minutes.

  • Remove from heat and allow to rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Country of origin:

We source our organic products from various locations depending on harvest schedules, weather and availability. This means the country of origin will be lot specific.

You can determine where in the world our current inventory originates from by referring to the 2 letter ISO Country Code appearing on the COA. For instance: Canada = CA, Mexico = MX, China = CN, and of course, US = United States of America.
