Organic Steel Cut Oats
$4.85 – $20.00
Ingredients: Organic Whole Grain Oats
Status Update March 2022:
A global reporting agency providing a unified view of the Earth’s ecology and the global economy, reports the world’s oat production is down over 40 %. The world’s largest oat producer, Canada, lost nearly 50 percent of its oats due to paralyzing droughts in North America.
Severe droughts are not the only factor contributing to the ongoing oat shortage. Glyphosate, a chemical desiccant used to expedite harvesting, has jeopardizes the “organic” status of oats across the U.S.
Increase awareness and health concerns have put a spotlight on the manufacturer of the weed-killing product Roundup, who settled an $11 billion lawsuit claiming exposure to glyphosate causes non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Oats grow best in temperate climates which appeal less to wheat and row crops. Countries in the EU have de-facto bans on using glyphosates which enable farmers to specialize in organically grown oats and eliminates the chance of cross-contamination with crops containing gluten.
Simply put, as projected year end stockpiles reach a record low, you can expect a shortage in available conventional oats and even tighter supply of organic oats and almost impossible resource for gluten-free. With the exception of Edison Grainery’s certified organic oats, verified by an independent lab to be <10ppms and also confirmation of glyphosate Regular Rolled, Quick and Steel Cut Oats.
As a niche market Edison Grain and Edison Grainery are continuing our relationship forged more than 14 years ago with Helsinki Mills of Finland. We have secured more than 70 containers of oats that are on their way to our California warehouse. The logistics of moving the containers are not without their challenges: obtaining empty containers, port delays and now the turmoil in Eastern Europe are just some trials we are encountering.
As with all our products, a lot specific lab analysis will be done by an independent lab. We’ll post the results online to allow you to make an informed purchase.
Anticipation is growing. We’ve started a list to alert our customers as soon as the products enter the stream of commerce. To join the list, send an email to: service@edisongrainery.com
Thank you for your patience. We wish you continued good health.

Storing cereals and grains:
The ideal way to preserve the freshness of our cereals and grains is by storing them in an airtight container in a cool, dry, preferably dark area such as your pantry. Oats and grains are organoleptic and can transfer tastes and odors that they are stored alongside. In other words, they will absorb the scent and moisture and may end up tasting like your left-over takeout.
Keeping cereal in the fridge is only recommended if you live in a humid climate or where pantry pests are problematic. Storing cereal in the freezer is not recommended as the process of freezing tends to change the molecular structure and the cereal could become soggy.
