Questions regarding testing for Chlormequat – a pesticide - are timely as many publications have released the findings of a recent study authored by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

The EWG reports that Chlormequat remains in our bodies for 24 hours after exposure, suggesting regular consumption caused levels to be high in its subjects. Non-organic products tested by the EWG carried consistently high levels of chloremquat, while of the 8 organic products tested, only one sample returned a positive result with "low" levels.

This is certainly worthy of attention, yet the minimum exposure level of 30 ppb (parts per billion) that the EWG uses, needs more refinement for before industry-wide testing is adopted. Edison Grainery tests our products with an intentionally strong threshold, for example, the FDA's guidelines allow an acceptance of <20 ppm of gluten in a gluten free product, while our products are limited to <10 ppm. The difference in this study, which needs clarification, is an acceptable standard limit in testing (parts per billion v parts per million).

The GWP recommends that you select organic products – grown and handled under the NOP guidelines to reduce your potential exposure.

Edison Grainery is an exclusively organic brand. We adhere to the National Organic Program (NOP) and pledge to obey the regulations for procuring, receiving, handling, storing, processing, and shipping organic goods.  Edison Grainery is an exclusively Organic brand. Food Safety is our paramount focus.  A hallmark of our brand is the robust lot specific testing that is performed on every lot of every ingredient we offer.  Each ingredient is submitted to an independent ISO/EC Standard 17025 certified lab for microbiological and gluten level testing. Based on FDA limits, our supplier’s specification, and our own hardline thresholds, we review each lab result before accepting the product that we offer to you. The lab results serve as our lot specific certificate of analysis (COA) which are available on the product pages of this site.

We’ll continue to keep a close eye on developing information and continue to consult with our industry colleagues to press for a relevant standard. We encourage you, as an empowered consumer, to stay informed and to keep asking questions!

In a word: Yes.

If you’ve joined us at Edisongrainery.com recently, you may be wondering why certain items are not available.

It’s harvest time in North America, where many of our most popular items are grown. Shortages in raw materials and poor crop yields are impacting organic food production worldwide.

Unforeseen spikes in demand, congested ports, and increased shipping costs, are impacting product lead times and inflating prices. Some ingredients arrive to our warehouse weeks later than scheduled. As the saying goes, we are often “waiting for our ship to come in”.

Edison Grainery operates in a very narrow niche market. Our standards distinguish us from many other companies, as we bring you certified organic, verified gluten free and verified purity tested products – free from major allergens. One challenge that captures our daily focus is packaging. We have had to adjust the sizes of many items as high quality food-grade bags are more difficult to secure than ever.

We are bracing ourselves for this trend to continue and we’re working with our vetted suppliers to find solutions while keeping our employees and our customers safe and healthy.

In the meantime, we appreciate your patience. We will alert you when these products arrive if you’ve joined our mailing list.

Thanks for your continued support!

Food Safety

A: The “BIG-9” Allergens, as identified by U.S. Congress in the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 are: Milk, Eggs, Fish, Crustacean Shellfish, Tree Nuts, Peanuts, Wheat, Soybeans. Sesame Seeds have now been added to the list with the passage of the FASTER Act (Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research Act) in 2021. In keeping with the law, we will no longer offer Sesame products as of January, 2022.

A: Our product lines do share some equipment; however, we take a number of documented steps to prevent any cross-contact and to ensure an allergen free environment:

  • We schedule the packaging of like products (ex: Black Beans, Red Kidney Beans) in sequence to reduce the possibility of cross-category-contact.
  • All of our equipment is cleaned between each new product type.
  • All equipment is verified with an ATP (adenosine Triphosphate) swab test before every product enters production, regardless of type.  This ensures equipment is free of any residue from previously products.
  • At least one PCQI trained staff member is present at all times as our products are packaged.

A: Every single lot of organic ingredients that Edison Grainery receives is tested in a 3rdparty laboratory BEFORE it is packaged for sale. Most gluten free certifiers set a gluten threshold of <15ppm (parts per million). Our mandatory threshold for gluten in our products is <10ppm. Test results for individual lots can be found on our product pages.

A: Short explanations of our certification logos can be found on each product page of this site. For a deeper dive into our testing program, check out our Quality Testing page!
